YCC YCC theory test

For whom ?

Any YCC member is welcome to pass the YCC internal theory test. Passing this test is, for some members, required for obtaining the YCC licence for certain types of boat.

General principle

Members who have passed the theory test of the Swiss police (Art 87) with a view to obtaining a Swiss sailing permit, as well as members not legally required to hold a Swiss D permit but holding a national permit on the basis of which a Swiss D or A permit could be obtained if the member were to change their residence to Switzerland, do not have do not have to pass a YCC theory exam. The list of national permits that can be exchanged for Swiss sailing permits can found in the Circulaire 43 of the Office Federal des transport.

All other members who wish to obtain a YCC Surprise or cabin keel-boat licence, are required to pass a YCC internal theory exam.

Club members resident in Switzerland for more than 12 months

People who have resided in Switzerland for 12 months or more, have to obtain their D or A permit either by passing the police test or in exchange of another national permit.

All other club members

Residents of other countries than Switzerland, or resident in Switzerland for less than 12 months need, as a rule, to hold documents as required by their national authorities to be able to sail the club's Surprise and Gib Sea. Currently a theory test is required to obtain a Surprise or Gib Sea 'key' for this category, which offsets the requirement to pass a written test with the Swiss authorities for Swiss residents.

However, club members who hold a national permit on the basis of which a Swiss D or A permit could be obtained if the member were to change their residence to Switzerland, are exempt from passing a YCC theory exam.

Contents of the test

The YCC internal theory test consists, like the Swiss test, of 60 multiple-choice questions. Most have been taken from the booklet on the navigation rules on the Lake Geneva Naviguez sur les eaux suisses !, which is a condensate of the LNI and the ONI, and which is published by the Association des Services de la Navigation. A few are based on local situations.

A test is successful if at least 56 answers are correct.

Procedure

This test can be taken before or after the practical test, by private arrangement with the theory test responsible indicated on the website ("Courses – Tests" page, "Test Rules and Requirements" section, line "Theory").

The test is free of charge.
