YCC Level 2: Spinnaker Course
Eligibility
Any active YCC member who:
- holds any of the following YCC licenses: Competent Crew, Yngling, Surprise, Cabin Keelboat;
- has been offered a place to the course via the lottery;
- has successfully enrolled for the course.
Contents of the Course
The Spinnaker course introduces students to how to maneuver a spinnaker, whether a symmetric or an asymmetric one.
The course is open to all intermediate sailors who already know how to maneuver a sailing yacht
yet wish to become more proficient with the specificities of the spinnaker,
in particular to be positioned as a "number 1" crew member in the YCC regattas.
The course consists of five practice sessions on J70/80 and on Surprise yachts:
- master the basics in maneuvering the asymmetric spinnaker : how to furl, rig, hoist, gybe and leeward douse;
- be introduced some specific regatta maneuvers : hoist while rounding the buoy, trim, windward douse, Mexican douse. In addition, a man-over-board maneuver under spinnaker will be practiced;
- same as 1. with the symmetric spinnaker;
- same as 2. with the symmetric spinnaker;
- as a final session, the students will attend together one of the YCC internal regattas in order to exercise their newly acquired skills in real regatta mode.
Two schedules are available for this course, from mid April to mid June:
- Tuesdays, 6pm – 8.30pm
- Wednesdays, 6pm – 8.30pm
Outcome
The outcome of the course is not granted with a "spinnaker key",
but having completed this course will be taken in account by the YCC regatta organizers when allocating crews for the YCC regattas.
