Two surveillance outings with the Q boat are mandatory for all tests. Helping with the organization of one YCC regatta counts as two outings. The introductory tour is mandatory for new members who pass a test without ever having taken a course. Doing some maintenance is recommended, but optional. Making knots is part of the beginners courses, motor handling is part of the Surprise and cabin keel-boat classes.

Before taking a test, one has to sail at least 4 times with the boat: as part of a sailing course, with friends, on Thursday evening during the practice evening, in regattas. Whilst this may be sufficient for experienced sailors to become acquainted with the YCC boats, people new to sailing usually need far more outings !

When you feel comfortable with the boat you would like to get the key of, and have fulfilled the formal requirements (minimum number of outings, surveillance etc), then contact the test coordinator for the type of boat who will appoint an examiner. After the test, the examiner reports to the committee member in charge of courses, who decides whether a licence is issued or not.
The dinghy, advanced dinghy, catamaran and Yngling test consist only of a practical part. The Surprise and cabin keel-boat tests may also comprise a theoretical part. See the information booklet for details.
Recovering at least once from a capsize is required for obtaining the dingy and catamaran licences. A capsize exercise is usually done during the courses.
